BAY RIDGE — A RALLY TO OPPOSE THE OPENING OF A CANNABIS DISPENSARY on Bay Ridge’s 3rd Avenue is scheduled for Monday morning, June 24, with three of Brooklyn’s Republican elected officials leading the cause. Congressmember Nicole Malliotakis, who represents much of southwestern Brooklyn, and Assemblymembers Alec Brook-Krasny (Coney Island) and Michael Tannousis (Bay Ridge and Staten Island) are holding an 11 a.m. press conference about the proposed opening of a marijuana dispensary. Following Community Board 10’s vote on June 10 to reject the proposal, the elected officials are calling on the NYS Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) to reject the proposal. The dispensary would be a large storefront encompassing three addresses: 8412 (main), 8414 and 8416 3rd Ave. The four-block radius surrounding this location encompasses five schools, including two parochial or religious academies, a mosque, a synagogue and heavy foot traffic of students commuting, as described in a video of the meeting on YouTube. The owner of the proposed cannabis shop had refused the community board’s request to close during school dismissal hours.
The elected officials, who sent a letter to OCM requesting the rejection of this location, will hold the press conference at 8412 3rd Avenue, the site of the proposed dispensary.
