After being denied a variance in October that would have allowed a cannabis dispensary within 500 feet of Parkview Christian Academy, PTS Corp. is taking another shot with Yorkville, this time eyeing the Yorkville Marketplace.
A special use application was submitted to the city by the company and the property owner to operate a cannabis dispensary at 344 E. Veterans Parkway. The 0.34-acre property is located within the Yorkville Marketplace development.
A date for a public hearing has not yet been released.
The Yorkville City Council previously passed an ordinance permitting a total of one cannabis dispensary to operate within city limits. Since passing the ordinance, the city has been unable to land a business.
The two closest cannabis dispensaries to Yorkville are located in Oswego and Montgomery.
When PTS Corp. attempted in October 2024 to persuade city officials to grant a variance to operate a shop at 1508 N. Bridge Street, Parkview Christian Academy threatened litigation to prevent the business from being located within 500 feet of their campus, which violates current city ordinance.
During an October city planning and zoning committee, PTS Corp. representative Steve Weber argued that their company strives to educate consumers about the realities of cannabis and its effects for both medicinal and recreational usage. He said their marketing efforts and communications are directed and curated for adult consumers, not underage people.
At that previous location, PTS Corp. desired to have the signage on their business read “Consume Cannabis Company.” Current city regulations prohibits cannabis-related imagery on any signs.
Several community members at the city committee meeting argued that the cannabis dispensary would increase crime rates in the neighborhood and inevitably have its products find their way into students’ hands.
More details on PTS Corp.’s current proposal will be released as the plans make their way through the relevant city committees before coming before city council for a full final approval vote.
