ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The New York State Office of Cannabis Management recommends adults keep cannabis products safely out of children’s reach for Halloween. This includes keeping cannabis items that look like candy away from them to prevent potential use.
According to Deputy Director of Public Health and Education Lyla Hunt, the OCM has reported that most incidents of cannabis exposure among young people happen at home rather than during trick or treating. Hunt adds that parents should be aware of edibles, seltzers, and drinks as potential cannabis items and should be stored away. Cannabis beverages should be placed separately from non-cannabis items.

“Make sure when your kids come home that you check that candy haul, look to see if any products have been tampered with if there’s any allergens you’re concerned about for the young people in your lives,” said Hunt.
If a child eats a cannabis item people can contact the poison control center at 800-222-1222 to speak with medical professionals on how to deal with the issue. Signs of cannabis exposure in children include sluggish behavior, changes in breath, elevated breathing, and being clammy and cold.
