Product and food delivery app DoorDash is the latest major company to enter the hemp market.
The San Francisco-based tech giant, which connects consumers to local businesses, said in a news release that it has started delivering low-dose hemp-derived beverages, gummies and other products with less than 0.3% THC, the legal threshold under the 2018 Farm Bill.
DoorDash said that eligible customers in markets where hemp-derived products are available can order a variety of hemp-derived THC and CBD products from a variety of vendors.
That includes newer platforms such as DashMart to traditional brick-and-mortar businesses including Total Wine & More nationwide and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in Florida.
“With the growing demand for hemp-derived THC and CBD products, we’re excited to expand access to a wide selection of products consumers crave,” Jacob Morello, DoorDash’s director and general manager of Alcohol and Emerging Categories, said in a statement.
“As preferences evolve, DoorDash can now help eligible customers find new products to safely enjoy while they unwind and recharge in the new year.”
The company said it implemented several safeguards to ensure age restrictions, including electronic ID verification
Significant national shifts regarding cannabis and alcohol consumption prompted the company to pivot and follow other leading brands into the market.
According to a Harris Poll cited by DoorDash, nearly 75% of American adults 21-65 years old aiming to de-stress are considering using THC or CBD products this year in their routine.
The DoorDash expansion follows some of the nation’s largest and most recognizable multistate operators, including Curaleaf Holdings, Green Thumb Industries and Wana Brands, recently entering the hemp market.
As part of the launch, DoorDash partnered with Los Angeles-based THC-infused beverage company Cann to offer a $2 discount off a multipack purchase.
In Canada, a few provinces have greenlit cannabis product deliveries for consumers.
In August, Alberta became the third province to deliver marijuana through a partnership with Leafly and Uber Eats.
Uber Eats’ partnership with Leafly began with Ontario deliveries in 2022 and expanded into British Columbia in 2023.
Product delivery of traditional marijuana products in medical and adult-use states remains scant, despite years of regulation.
DoorDash trades on the Nasdaq as DASH.
