The first nontribal dispensary to open after South Dakota legalized marijuana for medical use is closing.
Unity Rd., which opened in July 2022 in Hartford, announced its last day will be Dec. 7. It’s a franchise from Colorado-based Item 9 Labs Corp. Another business from the same owners, The Hartford Connection, will close on the same day. It offers alternative health products such as nicotine disposables, CBD oils, lotions and gummies.
The 2,500-square-foot dispensary is at 404 W. Opal Lane, near Interstate 90’s Exit 387. The Hartford Connection is adjacent to it.
In a social media post, the owners said “the journey has been challenging as the cannabis industry in South Dakota has faced significant obstacles due to the state’s inability to establish an effective medical cannabis program that truly serves its residents.
“From the beginning, we embarked on this venture with high hopes, only to find the goalposts moved time and again. Despite our relentless efforts to support and advance the cannabis movement in South Dakota, we believe that now is the right time for us to step away from the industry.”
The announcement came the same week South Dakota voters denied an attempt to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
