REDDING, Calif. – Redding police officers conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near South Bonnyview Dr. early Saturday morning, and ended up arresting the driver and a passenger on both cannabis possession, distribution, and firearms charges.
According to police, when they stopped a pickup truck that was towing a trailer for possible vehicle code violations, they smelled “a strong odor of marijuana.” Officers said when they opened the trailer they discovered “numerous” 55-gallon trash bags filled with processed cannabis.
Later police said approximately 800 pounds of processed cannabis were located in the trailer. Also, they said they discovered an unregistered, loaded 9mm pistol in the vehicle.
Police said in a statement, “As the situation unfolded, a female passenger attempted to access the driver’s seat to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended. Both individuals were taken into custody without incident.”
Anabel Bentancourt-Meraz of Corning was arrested, along with 24-year-old Jose Mendoza-Hernandez from Kern County. Police said they each face multiple charges, including possession of marijuana for sale, trafficking, and firearm-related offenses.
