Next steps after northern Kentucky cities, counties approve medical marijuana
The sale of medical marijuana will soon be legal in Kentucky, but there are questions about where you can buy it and how soon you can get it.
“Unanimously, voters across Kentucky, not just in Northern Kentucky, said yes,” said Brad Clark, founding and managing attorney at Kentucky Cannabis Law Group.
More than 100 cities and counties in the Bluegrass state approved the sale of medical marijuana on Election Day. Union, Florence, and Bellevue just to name a few. It does not mean you can buy it just yet.
Last month, Kentucky hosted a “License Lottery,” deciding who can grow the plant and make it into products that dispensaries will eventually sell.
Bracken County and Grant County have been approved so far.
Later this month, the state will host another lottery to decide which places will be granted licenses to get into the medical weed game.
“It’s designed where there should be one dispensary within an hour of anywhere in Kentucky. That’s the goal of the Office of Medical Cannabis. They work with highways and roads to pass this that way,” Clark said.
Clark said it will take time before you can step foot in a Kentucky dispensary.
“I would say we’re looking at least six months right now, but I think that’s probably a good estimate for the first sale,” Clark said.
