Could Magic Mushrooms Be Legalized In New Jersey? – WRAT

Silly-Sigh-Bin. The silly business. Shroomers. Caps. Boomers. Whatever the street slang is for psychedelic mushrooms with psilocybin, magic mushrooms could soon be legalized in New Jersey.
Why would a drug listed Federally as a Schedule 1 substance soon be legal? Because a bill is winding its’ way through the houses of our state government in Trenton. A New Jersey State Senate Panel has recently approved a bill to allow the use of psilocybin for the purpose of health care.
The state Senate panel could have advanced a bill that would have decriminalized the drug but they shelved that bill. The bill they approved moves towards the use of the drug in mental health fields.
Psilocybin is the drug that is found in certain kinds of fungi (mushrooms) occurring naturally in nature. According to the Federal governments fact sheet the mushrooms have long stems and smallish caps with dark gills on the underside. Mushrooms with psilocybin are consumed fresh or dried. The effects of psilocybin range from hallucinations, fantasy-esque thoughts, loss of time and space.
Many people say they enjoy the effects while hiking or attending concerts however some people report very bad side effects. Among the drug-using community those experiences are called, “bad trips”. Negative side effects of magic mushrooms include vomiting, panic and hysteria, suicidal thoughts and loss of muscle control.
A state Senate panel has recently approved a state bill that would allow for the use of psilocybin in health care. Mental health professionals have been testing small dosage psilocybin as part of a treatment for multiple issues. They have found success in dealing with depression and Post Traumatic Distress Syndrome for example. In Oregon, where lawmakers legalized psilocybin last year, it’s use for the treatment of PTSD has begun to be documented.
Interestingly, Oregon decriminalized many other drugs, not just magic mushrooms. Back in 2020 as part of a ballot imitative voters approved the decriminalization of heroin, cocaine, meth and more. However the experiment into legal drugs was soon deemed a big mistake because of how the state rolled out it’s decriminalization efforts.
The bill that has advanced in the New Jersey state Senate panel would not outright legalize magic mushrooms. But it would allow for a way for the use of psilocybin for mental health by creating a New Jersey Psilocybin Advisory Board.
Psilocybin Advisory Board would establish qualifying medical conditions for use, propose guidelines for psilocybin services and dosage, craft safety screenings and informed consent practices and oversee facilitator education, training and conduct.
