Regarding the Guest Commentary written by the attorney for WAMM supporting the proposed cannabis dispensary near Santa Cruz High School, naturally he supports it. However, community members, parents, and Santa Cruz City Schools staff and administration all see the flaws in this proposed location. No one thinks that students can walk in the door of the dispensary and come away with gummies, vape pens or weed, but anyone with teens or even a snippet of reasonable thinking knows that shoulder tapping does occur and that proximity to a high school with an open campus policy equals potential problems.
Just because it is legal does not make it a good idea. This is not an indictment of WAMM, which has performed a community service for vets and others in medical need, but reflects on location, location, location, and this is a poor one. Let’s hope the City Council looks beyond the letter of the law to address the common sense (or lack thereof) of this poorly chosen location, and denies the permit.
